Ace of the Iron Cross - Ernst Udet
Lt. Ernst Udet was the leading surviving German ace of World War I and his 62 victories placed him second only to the great Manfred von Richthofen, the "Red Baron". He also had the distinction of being the youngest German ace, having entered the service in 1914 at 18 years of age. When the Armistice was signed in November 1918, he had reached the ripe old age of 22. Udet, who began the war as a motorcyclist, transferred to the air service and became a pilot. He flew as an enlisted man because the Germans, like the French and English, did not necessarily give commissions to their pilots. Later Udet became an officer, and by the end of the war commanded a fighter squadron in the "Red Baron's" Fighter Group No. 1. Before joining von Richthofen, he was in command of Fighter Squadron 37.
